Suicide Prevention

I am particularly passionate about suicide prevention and have undergone ASIST training, which equips me to provide emergency mental health first aid to individuals in crisis. This training enables me to respond swiftly and effectively to someone who may be suicidal, ensuring they are connected to the appropriate services for ongoing support.

Throughout my 8 years in the mental health field, I have observed that many professionals and therapists still feel apprehensive about addressing the topic of suicide. I aim to break down these stigmas and foster open conversations about this critical issue. It’s essential to understand that asking someone if they are suicidal does not plant the idea in their mind; it can be a vital step in offering them support.

Suicide remains a significant issue, especially among young people in the UK, where it is the leading cause of death for individuals under the age of 35. In 2022, tragically, 1,796 young people in this age group took their own lives, with approximately three-quarters being boys or young men. On average, five young people lose their lives to suicide each day, and over 200 teenagers are lost each year.

Research indicates that with timely and appropriate intervention, many of these tragedies can be prevented. I am committed to expanding my work in this area and collaborating closely with suicide prevention charities within the community. By raising awareness and providing support, I hope to contribute to the effort of reducing these heartbreaking statistics and helping those in need find hope and healing.

If you are seeking support or know someone who is, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we can work towards a brighter future.
